Overview

The Gilthead Seabream is a prominent marine fish recognized by a distinct golden bar located between its eyes, which gives the species its common name. It is widely distributed across the Mediterranean Sea and the eastern Atlantic Ocean, where it is highly valued both as a commercial food fish and a key species in aquaculture.

Appearance

This species features a tall, compressed body with a characteristic large black spot on the gill cover. Its snout is notably long, measuring more than twice the diameter of its eye. The overall coloration is generally silvery-grey, highlighted by the signature golden band across the forehead.

Biology & behavior

Gilthead Seabream are protandric hermaphrodites, meaning they typically mature first as males before transitioning into females after their second or third year. They are known to be active, social fish that inhabit various coastal environments. Spawning generally occurs during the cooler months, typically between October and December.
