Overview

The smooth trunkfish is a distinctive marine ray-finned fish belonging to the boxfish family, found primarily in the western Atlantic Ocean including the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. It is easily recognized by its rigid, armor-like skeletal enclosure and distinct triangular body shape. This species is frequently encountered by divers exploring tropical and subtropical coral reef environments.

Appearance

The body of the smooth trunkfish is encased within a solid, bony carapace formed of fused, hexagonal plate-like scales. When viewed from the front, the body appears triangular with a narrow top and a wider base. Its coloration typically features a dark background adorned with small white spots, often arranged in honeycomb-like patterns across the midsection. The snout is pointed with thick, protruding lips surrounding a small mouth, and the fins are usually yellowish.

Biology & behavior

Like other boxfishes, this species moves using gentle undulations of its dorsal and anal fins, propelled by its brush-shaped tail for precise maneuverability rather than raw speed. When stressed or handled, members of the boxfish family can secrete defensive toxins from their skin into the surrounding water. They are oviparous, releasing eggs into the water column as part of their reproductive cycle.
