Appearance
This species exhibits a dark brown upper body that contrasts with a paler underside, which is densely covered in specialized light-producing organs called photophores. These organs emit a bright greenish glow that masks the shark's silhouette from predators looking up from below, leaving only a dark, distinct collar-like band visible around its throat. It possesses exceptionally large, saw-like lower teeth arranged in rows, which are adapted for cutting.
Biology & Behavior
Cookiecutter sharks spend daylight hours in profound depths, undertaking extensive vertical migrations toward the surface every evening to feed. To maintain position in the water column without expending excess energy, they rely on a large, oil-filled liver and a specialized skeletal structure. Rather than shedding individual worn teeth like most sharks, they shed entire rows of lower teeth simultaneously and may swallow them to recycle vital calcium.
Feeding
While this shark feeds on free-swimming midwater prey such as small squids, crustaceans, and bony fishes, it is uniquely famous for its parasitic feeding strategy. It utilizes specialized suctorial lips and a modified pharynx to create a vacuum seal against large marine megafauna, including tunas, billfishes, cetaceans, and even large sharks. By driving its razor-sharp lower teeth into the flesh and twisting its body, it excises clean, circular plugs of tissue, leaving signature crater-like wounds.
