Overview

Gomophia egeriae, commonly known as the spiny sea star, is a marine invertebrate belonging to the family Ophidiasteridae. First described by A.M. Clark in 1967, this species inhabits tropical marine waters within the Indo-Pacific region. Like other members of its genus, it features a distinctive structural morphology characterized by specialized skeletal plates.

Appearance

This starfish is noted for its textured and striking visual appearance, featuring prominent, raised abactinal and supero-marginal plates across its upper surface. These elevated plates often terminate in distinct rounded apexes or conical tubercles, providing a highly tactile, rough texture that stands out sharply against the flatter surrounding plates. Divers and underwater photographers frequently observe intricate patterns and varied coloration across its body, making it a notable subject for macro photography.
