Lettuce Sea Slug

Overview

The lettuce sea slug is a vibrant and distinctively shaped marine gastropod belonging to the sacoglossan clade. Although it resembles a nudibranch, it is scientifically separated from that group due to its unique anatomical features and evolutionary lineage. Known for its ruffled appearance, this species is popular among underwater observers in tropical waters.

Appearance

This species earns its common name from the heavily folded and frilly edges of its parapodia, which closely resemble leafy salad greens such as curly lettuce varieties. The body coloration is exceptionally variable, ranging from bright green and deep blue to pale tones accented with delicate red or yellow lines.

Feeding

Like other members of its genus, the lettuce sea slug feeds on marine algae. It punctures individual algae cells using a specialized, pointed tooth structure to extract and consume the cellular contents.
