Topsmelt Silverside

Overview

The Topsmelt Silverside is a small fish native to the eastern Pacific Ocean, ranging along the west coast of North America from British Columbia down to Baja California. It is commonly observed in nearshore marine waters and coastal lagoons where it forms large schools. This species plays an important ecological role as both a consumer of small organisms and a prey source for larger marine wildlife.

Distribution & habitat

This species inhabits temperate coastal waters, frequently occupying bays, estuaries, rocky intertidal zones, and kelp forests. Individuals tolerate a wide range of salinities and can occasionally venture into lower river reaches or freshwater environments during specific life stages.

Biology & behavior

These fish are known for their schooling behavior and are sometimes seen leaping above the water's surface. They are oviparous spawners that deposit eggs in nearshore environments, where the eggs attach to submerged vegetation or other suitable substrates using adhesive filaments.

Feeding

Dietary habits vary significantly across different life stages. Juveniles primarily consume zooplankton, algae, and insect larvae. In contrast, adults often forage closer to the bottom, feeding on benthic prey including amphipods, algae, and small invertebrates.
