Overview

The Mediterranean monk seal is one of the world's rarest marine mammals and the only extant species in its genus. Once widespread, this vulnerable pinniped now survives in fragmented, isolated subpopulations across the Mediterranean Sea and parts of the northeastern Atlantic Ocean.
