Privacy Policy

Last updated: August 23, 2026

1. Introduction

This Privacy Policy explains how SeaLife ("we", "us") collects, uses, and shares personal information when you use sealife.guide and the SeaLife apps on iOS and Android (the "Service").

SeaLife is based in France. Please read this page so you know what we collect and what we do with it.

2. Information we collect

We only collect what we need to run the Service. We do not collect your phone number or postal address.

2.1 Account

If you create an account, we collect your email address and a password stored by our authentication provider. If you sign in with Google, Google shares your email (and any name on that Google account) with us. We also store a unique account ID.

You can use much of the Service without an account. Some features, such as collections and saving AI chats, need one.

2.2 Content you add

When you use the Service, we store:

  • Collections you create and species you save
  • AI chat messages and answers
  • Search queries you send to our servers
  • Contact messages: your email, subject, and message

2.3 Voice dictation

If you dictate a question, we send the audio to AssemblyAI to turn it into text. We keep the text as part of the chat. We do not keep the audio file after transcription.

2.4 Analytics, crashes, and session recordings

We use PostHog to understand how the Service is used and to fix bugs. This includes pages you visit, taps and clicks, device and browser details, approximate location from your IP address, crash logs, and session recordings (a replay of your screen activity on the Service, which can include text you type). When you are signed in, we link this to your account ID and email.

2.5 Location

If you tap locate on a map, your device can share GPS coordinates with the app so we can center the map. We use this on your device only. We do not store GPS coordinates on our servers.

We may still infer a coarse location (country or region) from your IP address for analytics and security.

2.6 Cookies and local storage

We use cookies and similar storage to keep you signed in, remember settings, and run analytics. We do not use advertising cookies.

3. How we use it

We use this information to:

  • Provide the Service: accounts, collections, search, and AI chat
  • Transcribe voice when you choose dictation
  • Reply to contact messages (we send a short confirmation email)
  • Improve the Service and diagnose crashes
  • Keep the Service secure and limit abuse
  • Comply with the law

We do not sell your personal information. We do not show ads. We do not send marketing newsletters.

4. Legal basis (GDPR)

If you are in the European Economic Area or the UK, we process personal data because:

  • We need it to provide the Service you asked for (account, collections, AI chat, contact replies)
  • You gave permission (GPS locate, voice dictation)
  • We have a legitimate interest in understanding usage, fixing bugs, and securing the Service (analytics, crash reports, session recordings, rate limits)
  • We must comply with the law

5. Who we share it with

We share data with companies that help us run the Service. They may only use it for that work:

  • Supabase: accounts and your saved data
  • PostHog: analytics, crash reports, and session recordings (EU hosting)
  • Google: AI chat answers (Gemini), and Google sign-in if you choose it
  • AssemblyAI: voice transcription
  • Tavily: web search from AI chat
  • Resend: contact emails
  • Cloudflare: bot check on the contact form
  • Upstash: rate limiting
  • Vercel: hosting

For PostHog's own privacy policy, see https://posthog.com/privacy.

We may also disclose data if the law requires it, to protect people or the Service, or if SeaLife is sold or merged. If SeaLife is sold or merged, we will notify you before your data becomes subject to a different privacy policy.

6. How long we keep it

We keep personal data only as long as we need it:

  • Account, collections, and chats: until you delete them or ask us to delete your account
  • Contact messages: as long as needed to reply and keep a support record
  • Analytics and session recordings: as long as needed to analyze usage and fix issues
  • Audio: processed for transcription, then not kept by us

7. Transfers

Some providers process data outside France, including in the United States. When that happens, we rely on appropriate safeguards (such as standard contractual clauses) where required.

If you use the Service from outside France, your data is processed in France and by the providers listed above.

8. Your rights

You can ask us to access, correct, or delete your personal data, or to restrict how we use it. You can delete your account from the profile page. You can delete AI chats and collections in the app.

To request a copy of your data or deletion of analytics data, contact us. We will reply within 30 days and may need to verify it is you.

You can also lodge a complaint with the CNIL in France, or your local data protection authority.

9. Security

We use reasonable measures to protect your data. No method of transmission or storage is fully secure.

10. Children

The Service is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you think a child has given us data, contact us and we will delete it.

11. Changes

We may update this policy. We will post the new version on this page and update the date above. If a change is material, we will show a notice in the Service.
